This is an addition / remodel to one of the early build Sea Ranch Houses. The client viewed a previous house I had designed and wanted to open up his house to the outdoors in a similar way. This client is very much into sustainability and drives an electric car. Photovoltaic panels will be installed for power generation along with a solar water heater, insulation under the new copper roof, and state of-the-art LowE3-366 glass for all the doors and windows.
The existing house is finished inside and out with old growth redwood having been built in the days when we were not smart enough to know about sustainability and protecting the forest. At least not most of us. The existing fixed glass walls will be retrofitted with new Nana Wall System exterior bi-folding glass doors and windows, which allow almost any width of opening to be completely open to the outdoors. We plan to use wood frame Nana Doors to match the wood on the existing house as closely as possible.

Redwood for the new addition will be reclaimed redwood. This triangular shaped structure is a two car garage. Cars left outside in this coastal environment soon begin to rust. The new garage will also act as a buffer from the prevailing northwest winds. This will allow the new deck off the dining room to be a pleasant outdoor space with a small outdoor kitchen recessed into the adjacent wall of the new garage.
